Review: AKI Hotel Hong Kong – MGallery Collection

AKI Hotel Hong Kong – MGallery Collection

When planning a trip to Hong Kong, one of the first things I thought about was where to stay. For my overnight layover, I chose AKI Hong Kong – MGallery Collection, a stylish new hotel that opened in July 2022. I was especially excited because MGallery is part of Accor Group’s premium boutique brand, and this hotel is known for introducing the first Japanese-style tatami rooms in Hong Kong. Some rooms even offer stunning 270-degree panoramic city views, which made my short stay feel extra special.

On my way back to Korea from Bali, I flew with Cathay Pacific and had a short overnight layover in Hong Kong. I decided to book AKI Hotel Hong Kong, a property from the MGallery Collection that I had been wanting to try. Although I arrived late at night, getting to the hotel was very easy — the Airport Express Line (AEL) and MTR quickly brought me to Wan Chai Station (灣仔站) without any hassle.

After getting off the MTR at Wan Chai Station, it was just a short walk to reach AKI Hotel Hong Kong. The hotel is also very close to Exhibition Centre Station and within walking distance to the Causeway Bay shopping district, which was a big plus. Even though we arrived at night, the area around the hotel felt completely safe, as it’s located along a large, well-lit street.

AKI Hotel Hong Kong is a stylish new hotel that opened in July 2022, offering a sleek and clean stay in a city known for its many older hotels. As part of the MGallery Collection — Accor Group’s premium boutique brand — the hotel’s modern sensibility and sophisticated style were clear from the moment I stepped inside.

The hotel has a total of 25 floors, with check-in taking place on the 3rd floor. The elevator at the entrance of the hotel only goes to the first to third floors, so you’ll have to change to the elevator on the third floor to get to your room. It might be a bit of a hassle, but it has its advantages in terms of security.

After a quick check-in, I took a quick tour of the third floor. Next to the reception is the lobby lounge. It was decorated in a co-working style and looked like a great place to work or relax. It’s a bright and warm space for light snacks throughout the day, and in the evening it transforms into a relaxed atmosphere for a glass of wine.

Breakfast is available on the second floor, which we unfortunately didn’t get to try as we had to check out early in the morning due to our flight schedule. Other amenities include a 25th floor with views of Victoria Harbor and a 24-hour gym.

The AKI Hotel has a total of 173 rooms, offering a warm and inviting space with natural wood tones and mood lighting, all centered around a luxurious minimalist theme. It is also the first hotel in Hong Kong to feature Japanese-style tatami rooms. Compared to typical Western-style rooms, they offer a fresh, unique atmosphere and feel noticeably cleaner and less dusty, making it easy to relax and unwind.

The rooms aren’t huge, but the high ceilings and large windows make them feel very open, so I didn’t feel cramped or claustrophobic.

I stayed in a corner room with a 270-degree view of the city, which is one of the highlights of some rooms at the hotel. The view of Hong Kong from the 22nd floor was absolutely stunning. The room also featured a smart living system, allowing me to control the curtains and lights effortlessly using a tablet. Most of the windows had motorized curtains, making it easy to open and close them with just a touch.

The room was beautifully maintained, making it feel both stylish and spotless. The bathroom was also thoughtfully designed with two sinks instead of just one, which made it so much easier for us to get ready quickly on busy mornings.

The room came equipped with a premium king-size bed, a Nespresso coffee machine, MALIN+GOETZ amenities, a wireless charger, a safe, a smart TV, TWG tea, a tea maker set, bottled water, and Wi-Fi. It was the perfect setup for enjoying a cup of tea while taking in the night view. Please note that some disposable amenities, such as toothbrushes and toothpaste, are not provided in the room. If needed, you can request them from the reception or prepare them in advance.

Japanese yukata-style robes are provided to match the tatami rooms. The patterns and colors are beautiful, making them perfect for couples to wear and take some cute photos together. The slippers were also thick, soft, and very comfortable to walk around in. :)
