Hello! During my recent train trip in Japan, I stayed two nights in Okayama at the ANA Crowne Plaza Okayama (ANAクラウンプラザホテル 岡山). As a 4-star hotel under the IHG chain, it offers great convenience and exceptional service. Today, I’ll share a detailed review of my stay, including the pros, cons, and tips for future travelers. 😊
Arrival in Okayama 🚅
I arrived at Okayama Station via the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka. The station has two main exits: East and West. The ANA Crowne Plaza Okayama is conveniently located near the West Exit, making it a practical choice for travelers.
Even if it rains, you won’t have to worry about getting wet, thanks to the covered walkway connecting the station and the hotel. This thoughtful feature is a big plus for those traveling with luggage!
Check-in and Lobby Experience
The hotel’s entrance features a striking red carpet, a signature of the Crowne Plaza brand. Once inside, the front desk is directly visible, with a separate counter for IHG Rewards Club members.
- Ground Floor Amenities:
- Front Desk
- Restaurant
- Business Center
- Boutique Shop
Although the lobby isn’t large, it’s well-organized and rarely crowded, providing the comfort you’d expect from a standard 4-star hotel.
Room and Dining Floors
The guest rooms are located between 9th and 18th floors, while the 19th and 20th floors are reserved for banquet halls and restaurants. Guests staying in club-level rooms on the 17th and 18th floors can enjoy access to the Club Lounge. Breakfast is served on the 20th floor, offering panoramic city views.
However, one downside is the lack of leisure facilities, such as a gym or spa.
Hotel Rooms
Room Overview
During my stay, I was assigned Room 1512, a premium room on a high floor. Here’s what stood out:
- Positives:
- Spacious and clean despite the hotel’s age.
- Comfortable twin beds with ample space.
- A dedicated work desk, ideal for business travelers.
- Large flat-screen TV and a cozy sofa.
- Room Sizes:
- Standard Room: ~18 m²
- Premium Room: ~25 m²
The premium room’s extra space and upgraded amenities make it worth the upgrade, especially for those staying longer. The view from my 15th-floor room was fantastic, with a clear sight of the city and even the Shinkansen tracks—a bonus for train enthusiasts!
However, one downside is that the windows cannot be opened, which limits ventilation.
Sleep Amenities
A unique feature of the hotel is the “Sleep Advantage” kit, which includes bath salts and a sleep mask to help you relax after a long day. The bath salts were especially useful for unwinding tired legs after exploring the city.
Other room amenities include:
- A humidifier and air purifier
- Complimentary instant coffee and green tea
- High-speed LAN cable for stable internet access
Dining Experience
Breakfast on the 20th Floor
Breakfast was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my stay. Here’s what made it memorable:
- Scenic Views: Served on the 20th floor, breakfast comes with a bright, open ambiance and stunning city views.
- Custom Egg Station: Guests can submit a card with their preferences to the cooking station, and staff deliver the dish directly to your table.
- Exclusive Perks for IHG Members: Window-side seating and personalized services like toothpicks were small but thoughtful touches that added to the experience.
The buffet featured a balanced selection of Japanese and Western dishes, with high-quality ingredients. Fresh fruit, particularly apples, was a pleasant surprise, as most Japanese buffets typically offer pineapples or oranges instead.
Pros and Cons
Advantages 👍
- Convenient location near Okayama Station (West Exit)
- Spacious rooms with great views
- Thoughtful sleep amenities and other in-room facilities
- Outstanding breakfast service with scenic views
- Friendly and professional staff
Disadvantages 👎
- Windows cannot be opened for ventilation
- Limited leisure facilities (no gym, onsen, or coin laundry)
- Room interiors feel slightly dated
Final Thoughts
The ANA Crowne Plaza Okayama offers a reliable and comfortable stay for travelers looking for convenience and excellent service. While it lacks extensive amenities, the proximity to Okayama Station, spacious rooms, and high-quality breakfast make it a standout choice.
If you’re planning a trip to Okayama, this hotel is highly recommended, especially for IHG members who can enjoy additional perks! 😊
