Okayama Travel Guide: Exploring Castle and Café Kitsuné

Planning a trip to Okayama? This travel guide covers my two-day visit to the city, including the must-see Okayama Castle and the charming Café Kitsuné. Whether you’re drawn to historical landmarks or unique coffee spots, this guide has everything you need to plan a perfect Okayama experience.

Okayama Travel Guide: The Walk to Okayama Castle

Japan’s vending machines make it easy to grab a drink on the go. On my walk to Okayama Castle, I picked up a Ku apple juice—a refreshing treat with 20% real apple juice. The scenic route to the castle was an enjoyable way to start my day of exploration.

A Visit to Café Kitsuné

Searching for cafes near Okayama Castle led me to Café Kitsuné, a gem located in a quiet neighborhood. This particular branch is special because it doubles as a roasting factory, attracting coffee enthusiasts who often purchase freshly roasted beans.

Housed in a renovated traditional Japanese house, the café’s exterior is nostalgic, while its interior is clean and modern. With limited indoor seating, you can enjoy your drink on an outdoor bench or at a nearby park.

Café Highlights:

  • Menu Favorites:
    • Spicy Café Latte (¥680)
    • Americano (¥530)
    • Cappuccino (¥560)
    • Drip Coffee (¥580)
  • Seasonal Items: Heart-shaped cookies for Valentine’s Day
  • Merchandise: Fox-shaped sablé cookies, drip coffee bags, and more

I tried the Spicy Café Latte, Homemade Lemonade, and sablé cookies. The latte, with a touch of cinnamon, paired perfectly with the buttery cookies. The lemonade, however, was less impressive—opt for a coffee instead!

Exploring Okayama Castle

Known as the “Crow Castle” for its dark exterior, Okayama Castle also features golden accents that have earned it the nickname “Golden Crow Castle.” Surrounded by a vast park and river, the castle is a peaceful place for a stroll.

While the original structure was destroyed, the modern reconstruction blends beautifully with the natural scenery. Nearby attractions like Korakuen Garden make the area perfect for sightseeing.

Castle Details:

  • Hours: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM (last entry at 5:00 PM)
  • Admission: ¥400 (adults), ¥100 (children)
  • Combo Tickets:
    • Castle + Korakuen: ¥640
    • Add museums: ¥1,040–¥1,280

I visited on a weekday afternoon, enjoying the quiet atmosphere and lovely views. If you’re exploring nearby, consider visiting Korakuen or other nearby landmarks for a full cultural experience.

Downtown Okayama: Strolling and Shopping

As I returned to Okayama Station in the evening, I enjoyed a stunning sunset and a leisurely walk through the arcade shopping district. Unlike other cities, Okayama’s downtown area feels vibrant yet relaxed.

For dining or shopping, the Aeon Mall near the station is a great choice. With its vast size and variety of shops, it’s the perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing.
